Service
Intumescent Fireproofing Coating for Structural Steel
The Challenge
Fuel storage and handling facilities demand the highest levels of fire protection to safeguard critical infrastructure, ensure operational continuity, and protect personnel. Structural steel supporting these facilities must maintain its integrity during hydrocarbon fire events, making certified passive fire protection (PFP) an essential requirement.
For the Jet A1 Fuel Tank Facilities at Zayed International Airport, the project involved coating a wide range of structural steel sections while meeting the stringent requirements of ADNOC Specification AGES-SP-01-020. The application required precise thickness calculations for multiple steel profiles, strict surface preparation standards, and comprehensive quality assurance to achieve full regulatory compliance within an accelerated project schedule.
Our Solutions
POSCO delivered a complete workshop-based passive fire protection solution using the approved PPG Pitchar® intumescent coating system.
The project began with abrasive blast cleaning to the Sa 2.5 standard, followed by the application of a compatible epoxy primer to establish a durable corrosion-resistant foundation. Trained specialists then applied the PPG Pitchar® intumescent coating to the calculated dry film thickness for each structural member, ensuring compliance with the required fire rating.
To maximise long-term durability, the system was completed with a protective topcoat that shields the intumescent layer from moisture, UV exposure, and mechanical damage. Throughout the project, rigorous inspection and testing—including dry film thickness measurements, adhesion testing, and quality verification—ensured every coated component met the required specifications before delivery to site.
Highlights
- 2-hour certified hydrocarbon fire resistance
- 3,596 m² of structural steel protected
- 21 structural steel member types coated
- 6-month project execution
- Workshop-controlled application for superior quality
- Full compliance with ADNOC AGES-SP-01-020 requirements
Results Delivered
The project successfully delivered a certified passive fire protection system that enhances both fire safety and the long-term durability of critical fuel infrastructure.
Key project outcomes included:
- Certified two-hour hydrocarbon fire protection achieved across all structural steel.
- Full compliance with ADNOC and project-specific quality standards.
- Consistent coating quality through controlled workshop application.
- Zero rework on the primary project scope.
